1800 Larimer and Xcel Energy Regional Headquarters
As part of a six part series, we will be posting the biographies of the six Downtown Denver Award winners, which were honored by the Downtown Denver Partnership at a ceremony in front of 900 business and civic leaders on May 19th, 2011.

This is the story of a company and a building perfectly suited for one another. Their story begins on the corner of 18th and Larimer, on the edge of Downtown Denver’s Arapahoe Square.
In April of 2010, 1800 Larimer became Downtown Denver’s first high-rise office building built in the Central Business District in 24 years –but the accomplishments didn’t stop there. Market leading tenant amenities and state of the art sustainable design set this property apart.
Financing for this immense undertaking began during an unprecedented fiscal downtown in 2007. There was also no guarantee that local tenants would embrace a building designed with an intense focus on sustainability. But the risk turned out to be worth taking.
In August of 2010, Xcel Energy became the anchor tenant of 1800 Larimer, consolidating their 1,200 employees in 14 floors of the building, and reaffirming Downtown Denver as the location of their regional headquarters. It was easy to get employees excited with amenities such as a fitness center, a beautiful business center, 100% covered parking, a landscaped roof terrace, bicycle parking and easy bus and light rail access.
Dig a layer deeper, however, and you’ll find the design as impressive as the amenities. 1800 Larimer is also the first LEED Platinum rated office property in the entire metro area. It is a shining example of the ways our built environment can contribute to the climate change solution.
The building’s local impact cannot be overstated either. Developed by Westfield Development, designed by RNL and Swanson Rink, and built by Mortenson Construction, 1800 Larimer was created, built and occupied by local companies.
Today, Downtown Denver has a high profile LEED Platinum high-rise building to show how we take seriously the concerns about air quality, climate change and natural resource depletion, and Xcel Energy has a new home that illustrates their values as an energy provider and their commitment to Downtown Denver.
